The Glowno Shelter for homeless animals was established in 1998. Starving dogs and cats, left to fend for themselves, alone on the streets. They are found by Glowno residents in the woods - tied to trees. Puppies are found buried alive. Some of the dogs that come to us have been found down wells and in waterways… The cruelty and suffering humans can inflict on animals seems to have no bounds.
Dogs are also brought to the shelter by their owners. Often the owner brings an animal in because they are no longer in a position financially to support the animal’s upkeep. Quite often, animals come into the shelter because the owner decides they no longer want the animal on a whim or simply because the dog is old and sick…
We also have several dogs we have removed from quite hellish situations… quite often the dogs are traumatised from beatings, starvation, and sensory deprivation – in some cases, they have been detained in dark closets and have been frightened beyond the point of rehabilitative return… Even now they cower in kennels and keep their eyes downcast in fear.
The Lodz Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Glowno, an offshoot of Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Lodz, is responsible for the shelter. The Glowno Circle consists of 12 people, who volunteer for the benefit of animals from the shelter and animals requiring special attention.

The is tremendous demand for our services because the numbers of animals that come to us increase all the time.
You can support Asylum by donating food, kennels or materials for sheltering animals, blankets, old quilts, collars, leashes, bowls, and cash donations.
The founder and most active volunteer at the shelter is the Chairwoman of the Circle –
Mrs. Zofia Barańska, who has been working at the shelter for the past 10 years.
At the beginning, the shelter was located on local government land at Dworska Street. Since September 2007, it is located at Piaskowa Street 37, by the Sewage Treatment Plant.
At first only one of our workers was employed, Mrs. Zofia Antosiak – a dedicated animal lover. She is devoted to them deeply, and puts most of her time into work at the shelter. Zosia does hard, physical work beyond the capabilities of one person. This is why in 2009 we have committed to assigning an assistant to lighten Zosia’s workload, who has commenced work with the shelter since July 2009, contracted for 1 year.
